While reading the article, "Identity Production in a Networked Culture: Why Youth Heart MySpace," I started to wonder why the switch from MySpace to Facebook occurred. MySpace was the big deal when we were first starting to use the internet, and most of us couldn't wait until we could finally have an account. Then Facebook came into play, and suddenly MySpace didn't seem so cool anymore. I personally never had a MySpace, so I wonder why so many people suddenly started using Facebook as well, and then sort of stopped using their MySpace accounts altogether?
Since I never had a MySpace, I cannot give reasons why I would have switched, but according to John Quain, from Fox News, a lot of the "switch" was predictable. People became tired of the messiness and unorganized ways of MySpace. Right when things started to really become a problem for a lot of users, the new, sleek Facebook came out and allowed people to connect with others much simpler, and without all of the extra nonsense. In my personal opinion, I believe that Facebook's Timeline appearance does make the site look "messier" but then again, its a new feature for me, so maybe I just need to get used to it. How about you, if you had a MySpace account but then virtually left it for Facebook, what were your reasons?
